Agoraphobia can be treated with psychotherapy, complementary therapies or medication. There are many therapies that can be learnt yourself and used to great effect by purchasing one of the many products available on the Internet.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
There is a form of psychotherapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that is a highly effective method of agoraphobia treatment. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is considered by mental health professionals to be the most effective method of helping agoraphobia and panic sufferers. It works by decreasing the negative thoughts and behaviour that lead to anxiety. One of the most popular products available online for overcoming agoraphobia and panic is called Panic Away. This is based upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Another popular product is The Linden Method which has helped over 100,000 agoraphobia and anxiety sufferers without the use of any medication. Agoraphobia is caused by anxiety and the Linden Method teaches you how to reduce these anxiety levels down to a normal level so that your agoraphobia simply fades away.
Emotional Freedom Technique
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an emotional version of acupuncture where you stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with your fingertips. This can remove the emotional stress that is behind your agoraphobia and panic attacks. You can learn the basics of this technique for free by downloading the basic EFT manual and following along with the tapping routine.
Exposure Therapy is a method that has a good record when it comes agoraphobia treatment. The sufferer will either need to imagine themselves in situations that raise their anxiety levels or to actually go and experience them. They must then use relaxation techniques whilst in that situation in order to learn how to control their anxiety.
Agoraphobia can also be treated with hypnosis. You can either visit a professional hypnotherapist for treatment or you can use one of the many hypnotherapy CD's, DVD's or hypnosis MP3 downloads that are available online. You can get hypnosis products specifically designed to treat agoraphobia. The well known British hypnotherapist Paul McKenna has a range of downloadable MP3 hypnosis audio programs that include an agoraphobia title.
Herbal anxiety remedies can also be used for agoraphobia treatment. Valerian, Lavender and Passion Flower can all relieve anxiety and help you sleep. You can get remedies that combine all of these ingredients.
There are also Bach Flower remedies which are flower essences that can help calm your nerves if you feel anxious. The best one to go for is the “Rescue Remedy” which contains several different flower remedies that work well together to calm your nerves. You are unlikely to cure yourself of agoraphobia with this but it’s a great secret weapon to use against panic attacks. Even though I haven’t needed to use mine for several years I still carry it with me wherever I go and I find it comforting knowing that I have it with me.
There are so many effective non-medical treatments for panic disorder and agoraphobia that medication is probably best avoided unless absolutely necessary. Medical methods of agoraphobia treatment involve the usage of anti-depressant or sedatives which will make you drowsy as well as many other potential side effects. There have been cases where these drugs have caused severe anxiety and depressions that have resulted in suicide.
As you can see there are many therapies that an agoraphobia sufferer can learn from within their own home. This can potentially make the difference between somebody with agoraphobia getting help or not as travelling to see a therapist may well be an issue for them. That is if they are even able to travel at all.
