Did you know that most people's fear of public speaking is greater than their fear of death? If you are normally confident in social situations but panic about public speaking then it's probably just a simple phobia. If your fear isn't isolated to public speaking but to other social events as well then it's possible that you may be experiencing social anxiety (also known as social phobia). Social anxiety is where you feel anxious around other people. You may get anxious about what people are thinking of you or you may worry about whether you are going to say the wrong thing or look stupid. That might be worth looking into if that's the case.
If you suffer from panic attacks then the fear of public speaking is going to be focused upon the belief that you will be overwhelmed by your anxiety and not be able to speak. In this situation you will probably feel as though all you want to do is to escape. But you know that will just make things worse for yourself as that would lead to further anxiety and embarrassment when you make your excuses for running away. This fear of an embarrassing exit may well be worse than your fear of speaking itself.
It's common for people to fear public speaking but this is normally due to nervousness. Even the best public speakers admit to getting nervous before they take to the stage. But they are all able to convert this nervous energy to their advantage in such a way that it benefits their speech. It's like a pool of energy that they can draw upon to energize their speech and make them a more exciting speaker.
People who experience panic attacks find it extremely difficult to get over this nervousness as they associate fear with panic attacks. At the first sign of anxiety they will think they are on the brink of a panic attack and will lose control in front of all those other people. It is this fear of having a panic attack that is the real fear of public speaking. You have to break through this invisible barrier where you believe the panic attack stands in the way of you and your ability to speak in confidence. Once you have come through that unscathed you will have overcome your fear of public speaking. You may not like it and you may still feel nervous about it; but it will no longer be a source of dread.
